PSA

Idea 2.0 Final

Women get objectified, but it depends on what they are wearing.

  1. Girl's entering cafeteria in a nice dress. She passes two boys. They look after her. Third boy is watching them.
  2. Girl enters the cafeteria in casual clothes. She passed the boys, they notice her, but keep talking. Third boy watchs them, turns to the camera and says: "What people wear shouldn't effect how you treat them!!!"

NO Stoaryboard

NO Storyline

JUST our brain and eye

TOTALLY out of nothing

Changes:

  1. new storyline
  2. clear idea
  3. atmosphere extras
  4. no shaking
  5. warm :)

Directing is difficult and requires a lot of work, but I think I did my job pretty well. For the our first idea I prepared a storyboard and shotlist, which helped me a lot. But because we changed everything in the last second, we had nothing. Our idea was clear but I had to came up with suggestions for shooting. In one hour we were able to shoot everything. Each scene contains 4 different shots. The first one is her walking in the cafeteria. The second is a close up on the boys, where we should have changed the angle more. In the third shot we are closer to the girl and see her reaction while the boys are in the background. The last shot is a close up on the neutral boy, who is watching everything. Therefore we used Rule of Thirds.

We could definetely have used a second light because in every scene except for the last, does the light bring down either atmosphere or quality. Besides that, I took us like half a hour to make the first shot just because we couldn't agree on how we shoot best. In the end I showed Claudia how to move and Ethan was so friendly to do the light for Olivia. The complexity of our PSA isn't high. I prefer to say manageable. We had a very good communication. The extras asked when they had questions and we always made sure everyone knew what to do. Overall, I am very happy with my group.

My steps in post production are always the same. I start with a rough cut. Then I cut on the right frame. After the others brought in their thoughts, I make some last changes. Lust but not least, I add sound effects, do the color correction and find music. This time I couldn't find good music. Instead I used cafeteria sounds to create a better atmosphere.  After I finished the rough cut, I noticed, that the transition between scene 1 and 2 is way to hard. Mr. Raposa had the idea of reversing scene 1, which I think was brilliant. The black and White effect makes clear that it is something like a flash back. Before I shared the video I found a song that fits more or less. I'm not very happy with it, but it is okay.

I exported the video and DONE!

Hopefully is the commercial as fun as the PSA was.

Idea 1.0 Rough Cut

Women get objectified:
  1. Cat call
  2. Don't show your shoulders
  3. (Always smile)
Script:
Girl walks and is just happy. When she passes two boys they cat call. The girl turns her head around to look at the boys and all her happiness disappears and she gets sad. She keeps walking until the teacher steps in frame and put a jacket on her shoulders. She feels ashamed and stops walking. The camera moves backwards until she is a small piece in the landscape.

Location: Walk in front of Senior Steps
Crew: Claudia (DP), Olivia (Light), Greta (Girl), Grayson (Teacher), +two boys
Equipment: Canon T5, 1 LED Light, "Shoulder Cam", jacket

Storyboard

Shot List

Scene 1 (Girl is happy)
  • pan shot - girl from the front - camera stays in same distance to girl - only her upper body (5 sec in total)
  • Pan shot - girl from behind - boys in ⅓ right on bench - camera follows her - whole size
Scene 2 (Cat Call)
  • Close up on boys - they “freak out”/ cat call - Rule of thirds
  • Pan shot - girl from front - she turns head around - Boys must be in ⅓ left after she passed them (blurred) - camera stays in same distance - a bit more than just upper body
Scene 3 (Teacher with jacket)
  • Teacher steps in/out frame from right - girl/camera stops - only upper body - ⅓ boys, ⅔ girl, 3/3 teacher
  • Close up on her face - camera moves fast backwards until she is very small - depth center - girl looks sad the whole time - don't move
Fade to black
Title + Voice Over: ???

Rough Cut

Mistakes we did:
  • Shaking the camera
  • Ignoring the coldness
  • Not focused the whole time
  • Etc.

Film Diary

Monday, Oct. 17, 2016

Today we met with the Crew for the first time. Claudia had the idea we built on to. After only a quick discussion how we could film it, I still had no real idea what we could do to get a good PSA.
Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016
We started working on the idea in more detail and I slowly understood everything. After school I wrote the shot list and drew the storyboard.
Thursday, Oct. 18, 2016
Because another group used the shoulder cam thing, we couldn't film today. Instead we practiced with the actors how to move and I showed Claudia how to walk with the camera so the picture is not shaking. We changed some perspectives but overall are we ready to shoot on Friday.
Friday, Oct. 19, 2016
I emailed the crew one day before and in formed them that we are shooting from 7:50am to 9:00am and everyone has to be there to get ready. We had to wait for our two extra boys. In this time we practiced again. Really spontaneous we changed some little things again. But all together we were very quick and got all the scenes we wanted to have. During D-Block I edited the videos and recognized, that first of all it was too long and second of all, the story was still unclear. I decided to re-shoot it Monday and make things clearer.
Monday, Oct. 24, 2016
Together with Mr. Raposa we decided to change the PSA so it is more focused on the point that girls get objectified and it just depends on what they are wearing. This day it was freezing so we went in the cafeteria. We decided on how we are going to shoot it. Besides that, we added some atmosphere (extras), who created depth and more movement. Mr. Raposa helped us with coordinating the extras, which was quite complicated. Claudia was still DP, but Ethan had to do the lights because Olivia still couldn't walk. We had a very group this time, but everyone listened to me (more or less) so we were able to finish filming during class. I had a lot of fun and I am very thankful that all the extras helped.
Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016
I was already done with rough editing. So Olivia and I finished editing in class, but we couldn't find music that fits. I put some Color Correction on the clips and that was all.
Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016
We still had no music. After a certain time looking for good music, I gave up and put some simple soundeffects under the videos. Unfortunetely I forgot to export the final result today. But this wll be the first thing I'm doing when I get to school on Thursday.

Movie Review

The black and white movie “Poison Ivy” from the year 1953 is about the FBI agent Lemmy who goes to France to solve the mystery/crime of the stolen two million dollar in casablanca. Poison Ivy is the wife/girlfriend of the mafia boss, who plays two different games with our protagonist and antagonist.

“Poison Ivy” is probably not the best black and white movie but at least the story is good although sometimes difficult to understand. In black and white movies the focus is definitely not anymore on different colors but on a variety structure of the actors outfits. For example Lemmy wears a striped tie and Poison Ivy a beautiful decorated dress. Those little details make the difference to others. Besides that can you clearly define what someone is wearing (dress, suit, pajama, uniform, …).
Most of the movie was filmed in an one-take because usually the camera follows a specific person through the room and cuts are only when this person enters a completely new room or during a conversation when the other person starts speaking. They only did like the standard perspectives on a conversation and no creative weird angles. If the scene switches the picture fades out and the new scene fades in, which looks kind of weird for me because those transitions are the simplest way to combine two scenes without changing the story. Furthermore were some scenes in a new area so first of all you have to figure out where and who they are. The camera is normally on the actors and just rarely and on items like the gun. All the fighting scenes were the most boring scenes I have ever seen. The actors learned and easy choreography, which results in short and rough action parts. The worst part is that someone beats someone else with just one hit and there is no real tension.
It is very difficult to identify a person from distance because you just see a black figure moving. So I guess that outside-scenes are way more difficult because you can’t manage the light that good and you will have less details. Compared to that are inside-scene full of details and different structures.
The film team used probably a key and fill light to make the actor's’ facial expression visible for us. Their facial expression is clearer and stronger than in colored movies. Usually is one half of their face in the shadow and consequently darker. A head light shows us the hair structure and because we can’t see hair colors, has each character his/her own hairstyle. Each time they shot a dialogue they fulfill the rule of thirds and left more space to the side the person is talking to.
In the whole movie is almost no background music or sound effects. You here some music in the first few scenes when Lemmy was in a pub and a band played. After that just in two short actions scenes to create tension. Unfortunately they placed only sometimes a ‘hit-sound effect’, which is occurred to watch and listen to because you lose audience. Worst thing that could happen is a wrong sync of the voices because it’s just horrible to watch. This unhappily happened in one scene quite in the beginning.

I recommend this movie for everyone who likes Black and White movies, but for me it wasn’t interesting enough. I found a lot of mistakes or at least things I would do different (not in an one-take), so that it couldn't hold my attention for the whole time. Music and longer action scenes are definitely missing and would make the film much better. But whoever wants to watch a movie with an american FBI agent and a french mafia: “Poison Ivy” is perfect!

Notes

Mistakes made by NEWS Channels (with example):

  • They discuss with some people about the presidential debate and say their opinion instead of telling us the facts.
  • News have to inform the humanity (us) about what is going on in this crazy world right now. (Who will be president?)
  • Up-to-date: topics not older than a week. (date: 10-10-16; topic: presidential debate from 10-9-16)
BBA News:
  • Count-off: 3...2... but don't say 1 because the anchors will count 1 in their head and then start talking. (Otherwise we have to cut hard)

Moonrise Kingdom:

  • Every Scene is symmetric and has a depth center
  • a lot of one-takes and "panning shots"

#FallFilm:

On Saturday, Oct. 20, 2016 from 9am to 5pm, I was an extra in the fall film. Here are some things I learned and enjoyed this day:

  • "Lock it down" is a friendly euphemism for everyone to shut up and be quite in cinema language, because they are going to shoot.
  • Director: Camera rolling?, DP: Camera rolling!
  • Director: Audio rolling?, Sound people: Audio rolling!
  • Director: Quiet on Set!
  • Director holds slate in camera: Scene??, Roll??, Take??
  • Director: And Action!
  • Director: Cut!
  • Between camera rolling and action is the director still talking to the actors.
  • You have to be spontaneous!
  • Atmosphere Extra: doing the same thing each take.
  • the extras are not always used --> give them an opportunity to be loud and have fun far away frim the set
  • Lights: 1st Light is lightning the whole room, 2nd light on the person who is talking, 3rd light to correct things
  • Crew: Director, DP, 2-3 Sound, 2-3 Light, BTS-Camera, Extra-Coordinater, Actors, Extras, ...
  • IT IS SOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!

PSA:

  • Clear instructions
  • spontaneous
  • no plan is the best idea!
  • Jump Cut: same angle just closer
  • Cut: different angle (45°) and closer or same distance
  • Not enough light brings the quality down
  • shadows can look really cinematic
  • cut on movement
  • "Everyone back to postion one" means everyone has to go back to the place where they start in this scene. Each time they start from the same position.

Georgia was so kind and bought me tickets for the fall play!
